@tripleJ1955 They were very tired. They arrived from Germany 4 days earlier and weren't allowed out of their hotel rooms although I think John snuck out. By this point, all but Paul were tired of touring. Their last performance is only 2mo's away after Budokan.
As for playing to subdued crowd, I hear you, but if you give a listen to the royal performance (no noise whatsoever), it shows they were quite capable. Its my favorite live performance because you can hear them.
Best Regards

@myrtlebox I have the Budokan DVD and know just how bad the performances in Japn were, so you'll get no argument from me on that, but I do think they had a tough time adjusting to a composed audience that could actually sit quietly and listen to them play, that's probably the one thing they weren't prepared for.

@tripleJ1955 Don't think he wants to hear it - he wanted to know settings. The Budokan shows were not that great. The Beatles would be the first to admit that. The audio was atrocious (vocals especially). They were also beginning to discover how difficult it was to reproduce their many overdubs live.

@myrtlebox "Fender Bassman (Serial # 11679) was the goto amp for both George and Paul from 65-69". That might be true for the studio, but Vox dominated the stage during Beatles live performances. If staxtics wants to hear Day Tripper through Vox amps, he should check the video of the song being performed in Japan at the Budokan. Peace.
-
@staxtics Not recorded with Vox - they are using Fender Bassman's
The exceptionally specific 45-watt Fender Bassman (Serial # 11679) was the goto amp for both George and Paul from 65-69. George eventually retained after breakup and is still in his estate. It is well known as "The Beatles Amp" and is by far the most important single amp in Beatles recording history.
Go see BeatlesGear site for lots of good info.
