DKA is a complication of diabetes elicited by infection, stress, MI etc. it is important to recognize this complication and treated as soon as possible.

  • One question: Why do we give potassium when the patient is already hyperkalemic?

  • @EGEN123 - because patients are pseudohyperkalemic secondary to the metabolic acidosis. You have to replete the potassium as soon as it reaches around 5 because insulin causes influx of glucose and potassium into the cells.

  • @aznladuk007 it giving insulin will cause the fake glucose to go back in

  • @EGEN123 well you give fluids first...after you give this, you will find that we do not have hyperkalemia any more (it was fake) and they will actually be in hypokalemia (they lost a lot through vomiting etc) so now you must give K+
