I don't know much on FDR but I know Lincoln and he did not damage the republic. If Lincoln had not done the things he did the seceding states would have become a new country and have successfully rebelled against the US and proved to the world that democracy was a weak and hopeless form of government. The British would likely to have come over and taken back the America, as it wanted to since it's departure.

Instead he proved that even through war the republic stands strong!

England was all for the CSA. They loved the idea that America wasn't as strong as it looked at that time. England continued to trade with the CSA for a while, but by the influence of English citizens, the Union's promises of war if they did not cut ties and remain neutral, and the fact they had other choices to go for other than the CSA for cotton they gave in and mostly stopped trading and helping of the CSA.

exactly. England was for the CSA but at the end of the day never recognized them as a legitimate country.

The Union did not reinforce the fort. They sent supplies such as food and water. Not even extra men, let alone weapons or ammo. Besides in the eyes of the Union the CSA was not a country, and their secession was not even legal.
