This November, when San Franciscans walk into the voting booth, they will decide the fate of the Pentagons Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) program in our high schools with the vote on Proposition V. Prop Vs proponents portray JROTC as a harmless leadership program that caters to disenfranchised communities of color. But lets review some facts that have been obscured by supporters of Prop V.
JROTC denies LGBT students access to post-graduation benefits such as higher pay-grades upon enlistment, as well as ROTC college scholarships. JROTC enrollment has dropped 70% with the introduction of the voluntary enrollment form, which prevents the forced enrollment of students into JROTC. Despite this drop, San Franciscans still pay $1 million out of our pockets to fund a program that caters to only 500 students, an obscenely disproportionate way to allocate funds. Lastly, there are already alternative courses in place to teach students leadership skills without ties to the military.
The No on Prop V campaign is endorsed by the San Francisco Democratic Party, the Harvey Milk LGBT Democratic Club, and the San Francisco Labor Council, just to name a few. Vote No on Prop V.
