  • Are the locks on the Volga river actually part of lock and weir pairs, or are they to avoid obstacles like rapids?

  • There are no rapids. Locks are required because the elevation changes.

  • But what causes the elevation changes on the river, there must be some obstacle (dam or mill weir) doing so.
