I wrote and recorded "GI Joe" after meeting a real hero who was injured in war and went through both the physical and mental process of surviving and walking again. Here's a song in tribute to and honor of all the warriors, veterans and their families. Kenny
Here are the words with a couple of options to what I recorded in this video:
©GI Joe (Words and music by LTC Kenny Allred, US Army (Ret)

Joe was in the convoy, second in the line
He watched his space and manned his gun,
What a morning, it was fine
A sudden blast, his friends had died and Joe was forever changed
He lost his legs and he almost quit, but a voice said "you'll be ok"

He lost his legs but not his life and he didn't lose his grit
He thought about his child and wife from the minute he was hit
He said "I won't go out this way, and I won't die alone"
GI Joe survived that blast.....now he's coming home

Joe picked up the telephone and his trembling fingers dialed
He heard his wife's sweet voice on the other end of the line
She said "I love you, dear. You'll always be the only man for me"
She lost a lot of herself too when Joe fought (for you and me/to keep us free)

Chorus

Joe came back to freedom, but he came back with pain
Not all of it was in his legs, some was in his brain
He almost lost his life again, he almost died today
But he put that pistol back in the drawer, (got up and walked away/and survived another day)

Chorus:
...add GI Joe CHOSE life today,...now he's finally home (repeat) end with taps(option)....

  • great job Ken...

  • Thanks, Kenny, for honoring our veterans and for your service to our country. I hope everyone who sees this realizes that those who suffer are those who gave what they could to ensure freedom for all of us. Our veterans deserve our utmost respect and recognition.

  • Dear Kenny, Thank you very much for recording this video in honor of "GI Joe". Your recording just happens to be near the time, November 11th, that we honor our military veterans. I happen to be a friend of one "Joe". Good timing. Thank you.

  • Thank you for this lovely tribute Kenny. If you could be so kind to post the lyrics here for those who are hearing impaired I'm sure it would be greatly appreciated. God bless our troops and God bless you for composing this wonderful song. †

  • Great song Kenny! I'm proud to have had the pleasure of raising Joe and his brother Jason through the middle part of there young lives. They are both true "American Heroes" that will forever be in my heart. Love them both very much. God Bless America and God Bless our Troops.

  • Lovely song for a lovely man. Thanks for what you did for our country, Joe. I've always known that you were a brave soul. I'll be thinkin' of you on Veteran's Day. ;)

  • Great job Kenny! Very creative, and i believe this song can help others understand what veterans like you and I go through sometimes on the inside. War is never easy, and home can be even harder!
