The Weir is about 20 foot high and stands on the River Etherow, it was used to carry water to the Cotton Mill which used to be at Etherow Country Park. The original bridge has long since gone and was replaced in 2006 by a new one. The River Etherow flows into the River Goyt which then flows into the River Mersey.
When we get heavy rain up in the hills the weir sees lots of action from a constant barrage of water flooding down the River Etherow. If you stand on the bridge when it is in full flow the noise of the rushing water is quite deafening, and if you stare into the raging water you will be drawn into the chaotic journey as it makes its way down the River Etherow.
