The student needs to start his downswing from the ground up and more with the hips and player who tend to swing over the top he tilts his trunk and this causes the club to come over the top a drill that you could use is to put a glove or a towel underneath the right arm pit and try to keep it there especially in your downswing.
This drill does not attack the reason why we golfers-wannabe come over the top. It will sure give you feedback but most of us are not likely going to fix it with this. I would suggest this in combination with a step drill, bump drill or something.
It's not a good tip in all honesty. Most over the top swingers will find a way to avoid the obstacle-curing the OTT, but as soon as the object is removed OTT will return. Unless the correct sequencing is learned then the OTT will remain. The student needs to learn to start the downswing sequence with the lower body-ie hip bump/weight shift. This tip is a bit of a band aid.
