IGNACY JAN PADEREWSKI — Series de Morceaux Opus 16: No. 4. Nocturne, played by Jonathan Plowright.

This Nocturne in B flat major is the fourth in a series of 7 miscellanea for piano published in 1888, when Paderewski was 28 years old. He regularly featured individual items from this series in his own concert performances - not necessarily in the order listed. Nos. 2,4, 5,6 and 7 - including the Nocturne - are dedicated to Princess R. Bassaraba de Brancovan - to whom Paderewski's Polish Fantasy is also dedicated.

Jonathan Plowright has performed this Nocturne twice in Dublin in recent years: it was the encore of his recital at the National Gallery of Ireland to celebrate Polish Independence Day, 11th November 2007; and he also played it during a Chopin/Paderewski lunch-time recital at the Hugh Lane Gallery on 20th Februrary 2011.

Jonathan regularly describes this Nocturne as his own favourite among all pieces composed for piano.

  • sehr sehr schön, weil es langsam gespielt wird.

  • A gorgeous piece, at whatever speed, I think!

  • to play with this beauty at such a slow speed (4:32 compared with say Hough at 3:54) takes a lot of control and skill
