COMING JULY 21, 2010 -- Major loopholes in U.S. federal law allow the $50 billion beauty industry to put unlimited amounts of chemicals into personal care products with no required testing, no monitoring of health effects and inadequate labeling requirements—making cosmetics among the least-regulated consumer products on the market.

The Story of Cosmetics employs the Story of Stuff style to examine the pervasive use of toxic chemicals in everyday personal care products, from lipstick to baby shampoo. The film will explore the health implications for consumers, workers, and the environment, and show how we can move the industry away from hazardous chemicals and toward safer alternatives.

The Story of Cosmetics is co-produced with the trailblazing environmental health activists at the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics. The release will support the introduction of groundbreaking national legislation to regulate personal care product ingredients.

  • I stopped using toxic products... now nearly everything I have is organic or all natural

  • @Janted1 try looking for organic makeup at etsy.com

  • Very informative, just curious is there any good/ organic make up that anyone can recommend?

  • It is out but is fear-mongering propoganda. Yes I want safe cosmetics and personal care products but naturally occuring chemicals (like lead in lipstick check out snopes!) should not be used as a fear tactic to push legislation that will put many small businesses in jeopardy. I buy handmade soap locally because I know the ingredients are natural (and to support my friend). Please investigate further before believing this stuff!

  • @jojoinhere INTRODUCTION OF CHEMICALS IN OUR SKIN, COSMETIC PRODUCTS FOR MEN AND WOMEN STARTED AFTER WORLD WAR II. ALSO INCLUDES HOUSEHOLD PRODUCTS. BOOSTED AS CLEANING BETTER, PEOPLE BOUGHT IT. THE CHEMICALS USED ARE MORE COST EFFECTIVE FOR THE CO. CONCERNED I.E. KEEPING LONGER SHELF LIFE, CHEAPER INGREDIENTS., TO NAME JUST TWO REASONS.

  • Just saw the full-length and its great except that the 50's mindset = eugenics. It hurts my brain to try to think those who manufacture and spend (lots of) money on toxic ingredients to put in cosmetics are operating clueless to their actions, or in an old-fashioned world. Then the advertising should look just like the 50s, and not see something like Axe commercials. I know we have to keep it simple, but if we ignore the fact we are purposely being poisoned...we can only expect more.

  • There's so many problems with this video, I'm not even sure where to begin. I guess I'll just say this: EVERYTHING is toxic. It's good to look out and be concerned, but some of the claims made are completely baseless.

    Nice fear campaign, though!

  • @hyperseauton Personally I don't care about him anymore. It is just sad that a person can actually be paid to quite literally crap on everyone else's work and be as partisan as possible. He has no actual experience in any of the industries he claims to be an expert in nor does he have the actual degree as an economist but people still listen to him as if he was the gospel.

The sad part is that we have an industry just for attacking others ideas before they even have the chance to fly.
