On 4th November 2008, the UK Government's Environment Secretary, Mr. Hilary Benn, proposed new codes of conduct for dog, cat and horse owners.
Dog owners whose pets are too thin or too fat, are fed from the table or are walked when it's hot risk being jailed for six months or fined up to £20,000.
Don't get me wrong. I am all in favour of those responsible for cruelty to any animal getting their just desserts in court.
But honestly, feeding a dog from the table being classed as a crime is plain barking mad!
Whilst breaching the three codes will not in itself be a crime, it could prove the deciding factor in whether an individual is found guilty in court of a pet welfare offence.
This video is one man's stand against such a proposal and shows my border collie, Jess, having her dinner in the place where I usually have mine.

  • she didnt seem impressed having a camera on her when she was eating bit concious of being watched. very funny and cute not sure i like the idea of mackeral and cucumber

  • Thanks Lou. Mackerel and cucumber is what Sue gives me for my dinner as well if I'm lucky. It's not too bad really. After 35 years you sort of get used to it :-) Frank

  • Thanks for that. It's a crazy idea, so I filmed Jess as a sort of protest. She'll eat anything, by the way, apart from strawberries. Can't stand 'em. Frank

  • Is the same true for parents of fat children? Collectivist group punishment instead of individual responcibility. Liberals love punishing an entire class of citizens. Is this doggie law part of healthcare reform in the UK? Have they limited the amount of calories you can purchase at the grocery store yet?

  • Why feed a dog anything? A 0.22 bullet costs only 15 cents and is a one-off cost!!

  • I'm glad you want to invite your canine companion to share the dinner table with you, but there ARE good reasons for not feeding your pet dog the same diet that you consume. I'm sure you are aware of all of the nutrients dogs require to maintain a healthy weight and vitality. The MAIN REASON, however, for keeping your dog on dog food is that dogs (unlike cats) will NOT go back to eating dog food once given human/table food.

  • Poor dog, oye el perro tiene su comida, que de un humano que coma croquetas o alpiste? el ser humano come diverso a los animales, y estos deben de comer diverso a niosotros por el bienestar de el perro

  • i have to admit that i'm always amazed at what some people feed their dogs. anyone ever see IT'S ME OR THE DOG? the people on that show are STUPID. one lady was feeding her fat dog indian food and chocolate. another family was spending more money feeding their dogs lamb shanks than they were to feed themselves...yeah, they were eating tv dinners. what's wrong with people???

  • that is a stupid law, I cant see it ever happening, people will just laugh at it!

    nice dog
