UPDATE (11/21/2008), last revision of the arrange (MP3): http://dioxaz.free.fr/download/music/dsmenu_remix_retake2.mp3

This one has basically better mastering and better EQ. I used MDA Multiband for mastering.

-------------------

This is an arrange version of Dance Of Demi Human by Compile/LMS Music.

This song is actually used in all DiscStation discs (at least the Win95/98 ones) as the background music for the main menu. MIDI data is generally embedded within the DSMENU.MLK file.

Made by replacing the original GM presets by the following VST instruments or audio tracks:

- 14xVOPM
- 7xKAWAI R100 drum samples
- 4xlayers

In addition, I've included the original version of the song, exactly as it sounds from an OPL3 FM chip in order to create a medley. I also threw in some pixel art and artwork coming from various DiscStation discs, in order to make the video more pleasing and bring some mood to it.

This way you'll even be able to compare between FM synthesis and FM synthesis. Seriously.
My arrange still features the "FM synthesis+vintage drum machine" formula, and all FM sounds actually only use 4 operators!
This shows how good 4-operator FM synthesis can sound when polished and used the right way.
In comparison, most OPL3 sounds only use 2 operators.

Hope you'll enjoy.

Note: my captions go a little fast and I obviously didn't the best job in getting the right timing, but this allows more artwork to be squeezed this way. Also note the awkward "The" I mistakenly added in the tite at the beginning of the video

  • Well, I guess I'm far from being the only one who loved those drivers too, back in the day!

I never got why they weren't supported or updated anymore. Anyway, this was a godsent for any Sound Blaster 16 owner (or other probably) to have those drivers bundled on the "Windows drivers" floppy disk at a time when Windows 95 didn't exist yet.

  • Well, I feel sorry for SUPERDANNY9 as I accidentally deleted his message. I wanted to post a reply but i was refusing to get posted for an unknown reason.

  • No problem, Youtube fails a lot :P

The arrangement is awesome, I'm enjoying the MP3!

  • Thanks.

Well, I guess I'm not the only one having trouble posting comments on Youtube sometimes. :P

  • I love this melody, and your arrangement was awesome. Two thumbs up!

One question, how did you rip the midi from DSMENU.MLK?

  • Glad you liked it, too. ^^

I simply opened the file within a hexeditor then looked for the "MThd" string and removed everything before that string (and this made me a valid MIDI file).

  • Are those types of soundcards new or old? When I get a new computer, I'd love to get a sound card that has OPL3 playback, and can be used to program FM sounds in FL studio and the like.

  • I don't know if it's the software or just the design of the ym2151, but there is just such a purity of sound from VOPM - it sounds so nice and clean.

Hope you still make FM music.

  • Thank you. I used an Yamaha YMF724-based PCI sound card for OPL3 playback. Those sound cards are also XG compatible. Unfortunately, only the OPL3 part works on Windows XP (weirdly, only the XG part works on Win95/98 and 2000).

  • amazing

  • I like what you've done.

  • I totally remember being obsessed with finding the super sapi drivers because they sounded better for the music I was making (with Voyetra SP Gold)....I didn't understand why they sounded better...thanks for the insight!
