royal telephone This song became popular when telephones first got installed in the Kentucky Mountains. We included it in our folk show, "Singing the Moon Up," based on Jean Ritchie's book, SINGING FAMILY OF THE CUMBERLANDS. Performed by Susie Glaze, Kenny Kosek, and our sons Peter and Jonathan Pickow, it had its debut in 2006 on the U.of PA campus, in State College, PA.

  • One of my favourite songs from Sunday School

  • This is by far my favorite version on YouTube of this song. Thanks so much, I originally heard it in a play called Holy Ghosts. God bless you all. Have you ever thought of performing "A Wonderful Time Up There" in your shows?

  • Amen, Thank you Jesus your the royal Telephone of Prayer.

  • kickin on the dobro, bro!

  • Lovely. I love this vocal version and then the addition of the strings later on. We do an accordion duet version of this lovely tune! Thanks for sharing this video with us abroad! Bob and Hec.

  • wonderful ministry

  • Jean is a wonderful person who's story I have heard all my life. I never knew she was a celebrity until I was in my early 20's. She was just someone that we talked about who sang coal songs and was from Viper. Thank you for posting these gems!

  • This is a wonderful song! I really enjoyed it. I went to hear Jean sing in a small place in Berkeley CA maybe 30 years or so ago. It was a wonderful show. I bought one of her records and when my son was born 21 years ago, I sang him a lot of songs off that record. His favorite was I see the Moon. Now I'm trying to learn songs from "Folk Songs of the Southern Appalachians." Thank you so much for posting so many videos of your family singing.
