How to care for the coat of a long-haired guinea pig. Much of this can also be applied to short hair guinea pigs (you brush/comb them just the same), however, the trimming is really only necessary with long-haired guinea pigs (ie: silkies, peruvians, texels, etc.)

I know people with "show" guinea pigs do other stuff. I guess they don't really want to just be hacking away at their guinea pig's fur. However, seeing as I don't show my guinea pigs, and never plan to, I have no idea what these people do to take care of their guinea pigs' fur.

Thanks for watching! :)

  • The guinea pig looks like its getting tortured. but When u have a long haired guinea pig its good to bath them once every 2 weeks and brush their furr You CAN trim their Hair but Mainly do that For long Haired So their Fur isnt Touching The Floor And getting in their Urine/poopp.Soo Grooming Isnt Hardd Just Dont torture themm ^ ^ ^

  • @timegrrl just brush it softly from the bottom to the top till its opend and if it didnt just cut it.

  • Does anyone know how to take care of a Texel's fur?... Please help. :) I've had several Peruvians, and their fur never matted... But, Texels are completely different. I have one, he has a few knots I would like to get out and you're not supposed to brush them.

Can I use a slicker brush (or steel comb?), then dampen the fur to get the curl back? The knots are very small, and I really don't want to have to cut them out. TY.

  • chickery (?) is beautiful! :)

  • if you'll be grooming a cavy for show it's not advisable to cut the mats. can you show us how to demat a coat without cutting it?
