The Goldstone Report: The Legacy of the Landmark Investigation of the Gaza Conflict

THE NEW SCHOOL | http://www.newschool.edu

In the spring of 2009, South African judge Richard Goldstone set out on a mission to the Gaza Strip on assignment from the United Nations Human Rights Council. He was sent to investigate possible war crimes committed by both Israel and Hamas during Operation Cast Lead, Israel's invasion of Gaza a few months earlier. Many other reports on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict had come and gone, but the account Goldstone's mission produced later that year was different; it became the report heard round the world, as it alleged that both Israel and Hamas committed atrocities during Israel's 2009 incursion into Gaza, with Israel aiming to "punish, humiliate, and terrorize a civilian population" This characterization incited uproar in Israel and abroad. Unfortunately, the controversy surrounding the findings supplanted any real understanding of their implications. The Goldstone Report (Nation Books 2011) changes this. Edited by three progressive Jewish Americans, it contains analysis, commentary, and a context for debate.

Join moderator Roger Cohen (New York Times), former U.S. Representative Brian Baird, a critic of Israel's actions in Gaza (whose essay on Congress and the report appears in The Goldstone Report), and former Congressman Anthony Weiner (D-NY), a strong supporter of Israel's policy in Gaza and an informed critic of Goldstone's findings, for an engaging conversation on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the report's findings, and the ramifications of the changing landscape in Egypt for the future of peace in the Middle East.

  • Weiner looked Cohen straight in the eye and lied..Rarely have I seen anyone so eager to throw their credibility in the bin. Unexpected and extremely disappointing.

    Not his finest hour.

  • Hat off for Weiner to lie and distort, and deny facts, and keep a straight face! The sort of vociferous congressman that plays the same string on and on and on, until you don't want to listen to him anymore. I guess he firmly believes in his own lies! One should take comfort in Baird's and Cohen's shaking their heads in silence. You don't have to argue with a lier, when the lie is evident for everyone to see!!

  • @LibertyInProgressNOW A book? A book, you say? A Million Little Pieces is a book, too. Doesn't make it a true book. Weiner's "extremist" views on Israel are no worse than the other side's views: Making Israel out to be the sole aggressor and demonizing it and Jews alike. Either way, I don't think you need to worry about Weiner's politics anymore. Maybe he'll become an Israel advocate now. He's good at it and put these guys away in this debate.

  • @HDvideosaregood Then why would there be a book written about it, with so many people proving its validity? And even if it is bunk, Weiner's radically extremist views on Israeli occupation is appalling and far from the facts. I'm glad he's not in Congress anymore. Regardless of his mostly Progressive views, he was pushing radical views in the middle east with a pro-Israeli mentality, which is anything but Progressive.

  • @123col321 Weiner has spoken like a true Weiner! He makes Jews look stupid.

  • The biggest problem I have with Rep. Weiner's argument is that somehow JUST because a nation is a democracy, it cannot also act in a tyrannical fashion.

But we don't need to look at Israel for this -- anyone with even a cursory background in our OWN (US) history ought to be aware that EVEN with the Bill of Rights, we behaved like a tyranny both to the native inhabitants of this land, and to the African-Americans who were first held as slaves, then forced into second-class citizenship.

  • @LibertyInProgressNOW lol yeah totally, Weiner's worse enemey is Weiner himself. lol did you see the news? They're blaming him for sending photos for his Jr wiener to young women....

Baird actually was the best choice to go against him this though. I like Baird too, especially when it comes to issue of Palestine. He's one of the few non-Jews who can get away with saying the things he says
