This short piece follows Bedford's failed attempt to finally win a medal at a major championship...he came 4th. and this, sadly, turned out to be his last real appearence at this level, his running career cut short by injury. It was left to another hairy Englishman called Dave (as in Black) to take the race on in it's latter stages, but it was won with a fine turn of speed on the last lap by local lad, New Zealander Dick Tayler, in the best race of his career, turning in a Games Record of 27.46.4.Look out for brief glimpses of defending champion Lachie Srewart (who came 10th),and also Ian Stewart(6th)and Tony Simmons(7th).

  • " It could be said of Richard (Taylor) that no one tried harder to succeed at sport" . (Arthur Lydiard )

  • Tayler looks like he should be packing down in the all blacks front row, tragically cut down in his racing prime with arthuritis.

  • kiwis can fly
