@Curious142 IF only US infrastructure was this nice. UP should have an incentive to improve speeds and capacity to handle interurban(!) and national passenger trains as well as already tight transcontinental freight capacity.

In NSW "up" is defined as to Sydney.
ie. up main line(on double track), an up freight, an up passenger.
"down" is naturally the opposite.
ie. a down passenger is a passenger train travelling away from Sydney.
down track, down freight etc.

UP must stand for something besides Union Pacific. Maybe this is Australia.

Yes, your correct, it's Australia. Lines leading to Sydney are called the "up" main, leading away from Sydney are the "down" main.thanks for looking.
