My KITT scanner running on Atmel ATtiny2313 microcontroller. It has software PWM control for dimming several lights (configurable; '2313 has 18 I/O lines but this uses just 8). The rolling speed, tail length (dimming speed) and delay at the endpoints can be configured with the two buttons.
I made this for a school project to be done by pupils of age ~12-14 when I was teaching handicraft for a couple of weeks. They seemed to like it. (They had just to solder it and build the case -- I preprogrammed the chips first)
The case is pretty ugly, I know.
The inverse kinematics calculations on that paper have nothing to do with this device :-)
