This afternoon, around 4 p.m., a semi truck loaded with frozen fish, crashed through the guardrail on northbound SR 99 in South Seattle and flew into the Duwamish Waterway. We were in the traffic management center and we saw people jump out of their cars and rush to the edge of the water. Apparently, according to media, one man jumped in and helped rescue the driver who had punched out the glass in the cab.
All afternoon, we watched Washington State Patrol, WSDOT Incident Response team and private tow companies work to stabilize the semi, protect the gas tanks, which were full, and keep traffic moving. It was truly a team effort. The media helped us out by getting out the word that the highway was closed, then open, then closed. Drivers appreciate it when we work to keep even a little traffic moving.
The fish came back to life!!
