@hebneh Etta brought this to main stream, as did Aretha with Soul..Soul and wailing was around long before Aretha, but she put it on the charts. Just as Whitney did with " I will always love you" by Dolly. Dolly did it, whitney perfected it.
@luvureally It looks like you and I have differing definitions of an "answer" song. To my mind, a true answer song in this case would be Lou Monte's little-known "I'll Dance With Her, Henry (The Italian Wallflower)". However, we can agree that "Dance With Me, Henry" would never have come into existence if not for "Work With Me, Annie" happening first.
@hebneh Etta James' "Wallflower" or "Roll With Me Henry" WAS the original version of THIS song. It was an "answer" song to Ballard's "Work With Me Annie". Just like Kitty Well's "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels" was an answer song to Hank Thompsons' "Wild Side Of Life".
Etta James' version of this song was NOT the original. The true original was Hank Ballard's "Work With Me, Annie". It was far too sexual to ever be played on the radio.
Etta sang the words "Roll with me, Henry" despite the title. In turn, when Georgia Gibbs did the very mainstream version, she sang it like this one: "Dance with me, Henry".
What a fun song! Despite the negative comments here, it's a delightful pop tune. Suzi was a cute singer & this was a real "toe tapper"...strictly from coolsville daddy-o! I can dig it! THANKS for sharing with us! And HAPPY HOLIDAYS to our British cousins "across the pond"! :)
RE: "that's what record producers on both continents thought teens wanted to hear".
It's more like that's what white parents wanted teens to hear. This version sounds pretty good - until you hear the original - then it suc...well, you know.
Suzi is singing in the style of Georgia Gibbs' American recording (not Etta James' original), because that's what record producers on both continents thought "teens" wanted to hear, little realizing "rock and roll" eventually curtailed Suzi's career as a "hit" singer.

@hebneh True and Suzzi Miller would not have recorded "Dance With Me Henry" if not for Ettas' version happening first.
