Turkish Sultan Mehmed V Reshad Visiting Solun/Salonica/Selanik/Thessalonika

After the Young Turks' Revolution victory in 1908, Mehmed V Reshad was appointed as Sultan in 1909 instead of Abdul Hamid and he reigned until 1918 as the penultimate Turkish Sultan. In 1911 he visited the most distant European parts of his empire including Solun/Thessalonika and Bitola/Monastir. The Manaki Brothers managed to get a special licence to accompany him and film the Sultan's stay. Thus they filmed two outstanding films about his visits to Solun/Thessalonika and Bitola/Monastir. This film about the Sultan's visit to Solun/Thessalonika consists of a number dramatic, tightly bound sequences:
a) Arrival of the Sultan in the port of Solun/Thessalonika
b) His walking along the streets of Solun/Thessalonika with many processions and parades
c) The departure of the Sultan from Solun/ Thessalonika by train and his trip to Bitola/Monastir.
It is characteristic of these last sequences that they are shot from the train in motion. Thus, they managed to shoot landscapes, and the railway stations passed through by the Sultan and his entourage.
