The media and Republicans keep trying to stress the differences between Obama and Stricklands plans for education reforms, but the truth is the two leaders agree on most measures including shutting down charters that don't work or are not accountable. Governor Strickland's proposed education plan also prohibits for-profit management services of charters. Additional supervision is certainly warranted given that 64% of charters are on academic watch or emergency status, as opposed to 9% of traditional public schools. At the other end, 74% of traditional public schools were rated effective, excellent or excellent with distinction. Only 8% of charter schools were rated the same.
