The Big Book oF Mediocrities
by Carlo Isola
We couldn't quiteface thè issues ofeveryday life, too much influenced by thè horrific stories ofthe news bulletins. It's as ifwe had to read a daily extractfrom a hook called The Big Book of Mediocrities. Islamic fundamentalists have screwed us out of our media culture, but then what did we expect... thè television culture ofthe "first world" is sometimes based on very little, more often on nothing at ali. We thought thè boom in technological Communications would cause human intelligence to mature, instead it has kick-started an explosion ofmediocrity. Mediocre multimedia culture feeds mediocre international politics and we mediocre users are part ofit. Mediocre mainstream cinema, mediocre news bulletins displaying severed heuds and massacred children. Mediocre politicians skilled only in lying.
Mediacre mass media which we couldjust as well cali medio media. Mediacre education System that muddles along with a limp, just like thè parents and sour olà grandparents. Mediacre ali ofus, in a word. Culture, art and research have no voice; intelligence, trae intelligence, is not making itself heard, just when we need it most.
We "medio media people" have been caught out by a culture of death and terror we do not know how to recount to our children, and which we answer with a different kind ofviolence. We have been surprised not only by thè physical violence and thè bloodshed, but also by thè violence of an unprecedented negative culture which every day enters our homes on television and thè Internet.
Ifwe had been a bit less mediacre we might have responded with thè intelligence of people who invest in artistic and cultural research, in human values, in thè awareness of differences and ofthe immense storehouse oftreasures they potentially represent If we had been a bit less mediacre we might have invested in a future without recriminations, without thè scramble far short-term economie gains, without recourse to violence, and instead in ali thè things that cost less money but givefar, far more pleasure.
