Poor Joan, Gabrielle has stolen the show in history...

I was at about the 14 mile mark and what a thrill to see Joan Benoit running by way out in front of the pack...Dan

I too think this was one of the most loaded fields. . . any one that follows distance runnings knows the names Grete Waitz, Ingrid, Rosa, Lisa Martin . . . all that Benoit dethroned that day

This is for me really outstandning..it must be like 30-33+ celsius around there..i live in sthlm and if it is the same condition in our marathon the men winners have about 2.18-2.22..and this was in 1984 too!

Who was the woman who staggered across the finish line? I think I remembered watching that live in 1984!

Gabrielle Andersen-Scheiss of Switzerland

I don't think Joan Benoit had an easy gold medal in this race. This was the best women's marathon ever. Joanie was world record holder, 2nd place Grete Waitz was world champion, 3rd place Rosa Mota was European Champion and future world and Olympic champion. 4th Ingrid Kristiansen broke the WR in 1985.

Grete Waitz was the world record holder at the time.

No she wasn't. Grete did 2h25.29 to equal the WR in London on 17-4-83. Next day Joanie did 2h22.43 at Boston!
