The drain is a metaphor for Lenny and Gene. Like water through a drain, they pass, unnoticed through society and are eventually discarded. Lenny acts without thinking, much like water through a channel. Gene begins to change, disrupting the flow.

We figured that, after a double-homicide, the police would be watching near bye hospitals for questionable people. Hospitals would ask a lot of questions when a gunshot wound is present as well.

We used the name Lenny to throw people off, hoping the audience would think Of Mice and Men and feel sympathy for the character before finding out the crimes he had committed earlier.
