Basil went lame 1/2 way through his test at Larkhill. This clip is from the long rein walk and shows the trot work and 1st canter transition.
The judge did not notice my horse was lame. This was a BE Novice, I got 7 for the trot circle and 7 for the leg yield, the judge made no comment about his very lame trot infront of her car, he got 5 for the trans and 7 for the canter, IMO he's lame in canter too, her final comment did not suggest that she thought he was lame, that his rhythm was varying, or that there was anything wrong with him?! We got a good mark in our arena.

I did complete the test, I knew my horse was lame but was horrified when I watched the video after and saw how very lame he was. I dismounted and walked him back to the lorry after the test, we checked him over, no heat, no soreness, nothing, he was perfectly sound 15 mins later. I obviously Withdrew from comepetition.

  • was he lame before the test? because if so you should have pulled out, he could have been in alot of of pain.

  • @stardustmypony You're right if he'd been lame before the test I should of pulled out. However he'd been sound for 6 months prior to the com having been brought slowly and sensibly back into work. This was his 3rd event of the year having shown no signs of lameness. He went lame 1/2 way through the test. I completed the test hoping the judge may shed some light on where she thought the lameness stemmed from, vets had failed, rest had not cured the problem. I withdrew from the competition.

  • How is he doing this year?

  • @tylirthetiger Hi, he's doing good thanks. He's only doing flat work, I don't think I will every jump him again but he's staying sound. Just one blip earlier this month but I think it was unrelated. He's qualfied for BD regionals and been getting high 60's% at Ele level. Not bad for a horse vets said would never be able to compete again! We really just take each day as it comes.

  • Hi, How is Basil? Did you get to the bottom of his lameness? I have just watched your novice 26. I was very impressed. I have my first N26 at the weekend. i will very pleased if it goes as well as yours. Hope all is well with Basil. x

  • Hi, thanks for your comment. We did finally get to the bottom of his problem. He had to have an MRI and it showed a swelling in his medial collateral ligamement at the coffin bone in his off hind. An injury never seen before in a hind limb. Prognosis is not great, partly due to it being an unknown, but he's happily pootling about in the field in his £200 shoes!! Only time will tell. *fingers crossed*

  • @caz230284 I'm glad you can ride him again, though! Lameness is a tough battle :/ He's a gorgeous horse, I hope he continues to stay sound for you!
