I think some gators got toasted by that falling Atlas.. Alan Sheppard prob wished he didn't have that extra cup of coffee.... " Let's light this candle" Elgar's Pomp and Circumstances is a nice choice, but Speedy should have edited this better... Many of these rockets like Atlas and Redstone went on to have very sucessful programs of over 40 years..

@leftcoaster67 I absolutely agree....and any attempt to move in the right direction always seems to get mired in politics. That's why I mentioned that I'm happy to see other nations move forward; not so that we fall further behind, but rather so that we see that we need to get our act together. Just shy of 40 years since we last left the moon....given the level ol technology we have today compared to then, that's a real shame.

@SkylaneCaptain If you haven't noticed no president since Kennedy has seriously tried to improve funding to NASA and build better launch vehicles. There's been a major problem of funding since 1970. As one NASA bumper sticker said. Apollo 12 One Giant Leap for Unemployement!

1:40 Yay, the Vanguard I

@corbin2112001 No, Apollo 1 was a fight inside the command module on the pad. It didn't launch.

@Shipocute No that was Alan Shepard with the Redstone rocket, which did a suborbital flight. Sen. John Glenn rode an Atlas rocket all the way into orbit.

What happened to Lockheed Martin's entry vehicle project?

Personally, I don't like the budget cut of NASA and the retirement of Spaceshuttle.
I hoped USA make another vehicle like space shuttle which will make satellite launches cheaper than the rockets. That's why during the Reagan administration the NASA was looking for economical solution to launch satellites instead of rockets. I wish USA keep the Space shuttle bit longer and with the experience from space shuttle, make a brand new space shuttle.

At 8:14... the astronaut's name is Sen. John Glenn with his Mercury Redstone rocket?

Yet the Germans still did a better job compared to everyone else in 1942.....lol
If they wouldnt have been beaten they would´ve probably went to the moon by 1960
I really love to see stuff like this!! Pushing the envelope to go faster and farther. If NASA had been Administratively allowed to maintain that fevered pitch we would have stood on Mars in 1985 and we'd have a permanent human presence on the moon by now. What we need is another 1960's style space race. I'm always happy to see other countries rack up space accomplishments. Hopefully it will kick start our own program again. Constellation should NEVER have been axed!! Thanks Obama Administration!
