  • (Continued) That's why Dennis showed up drunk for the show. He was at his lowest point emotionally. I won't discuss this further out of respect for Denny, but this was one of my most incredible experiences with my friend. No matter how long I live, Dennis will always have a warm place in my heart as a friend. And his early passing is one of the great tragedies in my opinion. Don't worry, Denny. You are still with us in our hearts and never more than a warm memory away. Peace, brother.

  • I worked closely with the BBs for a short time in the early '70s. The story Reilly tells about Dennis going off on the audience is BS. It happened in College Park, MD. in 1972. I know, because I was there. The song he was singing was not Barbara, it was "I Have A Friend." After Dennis stormed off stage, it was Reilly who told me to back to the dressing room and get Dennis back on stage. It was the day Barbara told Dennis she had filed for divorce.

  • @95cooks Jack Rieley was an outstanding lyricist, equal to Van Dyke Parks. "Steamboat" and "Feel Flows" are two examples.

  • @frol1984 Jack Rieley's lyrics are equal in evocative visionary power to those of Van Dyke Parks. His collaborations with Carl and Dennis resulted in some of the group's greatest music by far ("Steamboat", "Long Promised Road", etc.).

  • @supg111 And Dennis ("Steamboat").

  • That's Tex Watson, right?

  • Jack buddy, those fingernails have got to go....quick

  • @19arc7O How in hell does a kindly old queen with nothing but praise for Dennis come over as a "jackoff"?

This page seems to be populated by the Mike Love Republican wing of the Beach Boys fan club.

Reiley might well have been a dodgy manager - I have no idea - but I do know that his contribution to the more important things - their art - was genius.

  • @frol1984 No, a "wanker" is far better defined by someone who is completely deaf to lyrical genius. The Wilson brothers loved Jack Rieley; Mike and Al didn't. Does that make it clear?

  • @blackmore4 Beach Boys songs to which Jack Rieley contributed his brilliantly unique lyrical style: -

Long Promised Road / Feel Flows / A Day in the Life of a Tree / Marcella / You Need a Mess of Help to Stand Alone / Funky Pretty / Steamboat / The Trader / Sail on Sailor

Each and every one a dead cert for any Best of The 70s Beach Boys compilation.

"Who is this guy?" indeed :-)

  • @machine1313 Who is this guy?? This guy is a Beach Boys legend. He pretty much single handedly turned popular opinion of the Beach Boys around from white-bread surf has-beens into the cool conglomeration of genius that those in the know always knew they were (some of them anyway - clue; the brothers :-)

"Sunflower" was brilliant but "Surf's Up" was even better. The reason being Jack Rieley.

  • What a beautiful post. May this wonderful man be at peace now.
