It is the late 1950's / early 60's and these are the rock & Roll years...And the whole field of comedy records was changing from musical satires to spoken-word comedy (Tom Lehrer, Bob Newhart, Mort Sahl, Stan Freberg, etc.).

And Spike Jones adapted to this too; most of his later albums are spoken-word comedy, including the horror-genre sendup 'Spike Jones in Stereo' (1959).

Jones remained topical to the last: his final group, Spike Jones's New Band, recorded four LPs of brassy renditions of pop-folk tunes of the 1960s (including "Washington Square" and "The Ballad of Jed Clampett".)

And in this contribution to the Ultra Sound 'The Crime Scene' There is a touch of late night in the dark alley of the Crime Scenes from the exquisite Ultra Lounge Series --
With just a nod to the Spike Jones of old in the final cheeky cowbells & klaxon horns finishing flourish...

I take no credit for the contents of this video - other than it being a tribute from an old fan of Spike Jones...

  • angerredfire,

A very sultry number that can evoke some very sultry memories for me of the nightclubs in HongKong in the 1950's and Chinese girls dressed in high collard long Cheungsam's...:)

  • That was awesome!

  • Heavens to Murgatroid! I've always enjoyed this jazz classic, written by the prolific Earl Hagen. And the extremely talented Spike Jones & his band give it a whole new spin! Love it! If the late great Mr Jones & his boys had been any more cool, they'd have been frozen! THANK YOU for posting this delightful "blast from the past"! :)
