it seems like it would be much easier to play without that enourmous pick-like thing. have you ever tried using a normal guitar pick?

@shamisendemon Kevin, I'll be in the Tokyo area in late May (nagauta recital there at that time) and then will be free for travel the last couple of days of May going forward. Could head toward Hirosaki at that time. Let's keep in touch and see how it pans out.

@lifetimestudent1 no problem. Takahashi Chikuzan is the reason I began playing Tsugaru Shamisen. I was fortunate to witness him live in Hachinohe city in the 1980s and that left a tremendous impression on me. I will most likely still be in Japan (Aomori)in May so perhaps our paths will cross.

@shamisendemon Great tips on lodging and club. I'll have my wife in tow, so not sure about the capsule approach, but cheap is good. The lead on Aiya is wonderful. Thanks for that. My Japan family is all in southern Shikoku so I've not had the chance to spend time in the Aomori area and look forward to it as I started listening to Takahashi Chikuzan back in 1974 when I was studying nagauta in Shikoku. Thanks for taking the time to provide the guidance. Much appreciated.

@lifetimestudent1 Also if you are in Hirosaki check out Aiya. It`s run by Shibutani Kazuo. It`s a cozy little minyo bar where some of the best Tsugaru Shamisen is heard nightly.

@lifetimestudent1 There are some reasonably priced hotels in Hirosaki called Capsule hotels which give you a tiny capsule to sleep in but also provide a bath and recreational facilies as well as dining. If you don`t need a fancy hotel I would recommend those I think they run about 3000 to 5000 yen a night.

@lifetimestudent1 Thanks for the comment. Come to Aomori prefecture in May for a lot of Tsugaru Shamisen! That`s usually when the big tournaments are held and Hirosaki city has quite a few Shamisen bars. Hougaku journal magazine is a great source for finding out about live Tsugaru Shamisen concerts or other trad. Japanese music performances etc.
