'Imagination' - just the first 4 bars - solo jazz piano tutorial. I limited myself just to the first 4 bars and tried to play with a variety of solo jazz piano styles.
There is a leadsheet on page 156 of Sher Music's 'New Real Book' Volume 1 and I will try to do a full version soon. There is a better quality, free-to-download version on my website at http://www.bushgrafts.com.

  • Thanks!

I think that for the Edim scale at 4:24 you mean that the fingering is 3,2,1,3,2,1, not 3,2,1,3,2,3

  • You are correct TromboneAl - the 3,2,3 fingering would be rather awkward!

  • i like that you just left the mistakes in!

  • Yes - as an experiment, I actually recorded this with a 'voice over' separately as I played - you might detect my mouth moving as I played. Aside from the problem of the rest of the world understanding an Australian accent, I have always had trouble talking while playing and I did make more than a few mistakes. So I removed the voice, and left the mistakes!

  • Fantastic video, Doug. I think I may finally be at the point where I can grasp some of your concepts. I remember you doing some HD videos in the past where the text was extremely clear, has YouTube discontinued that format?

  • Hi Justin

I think that they take an hour or two to complete HD processing. I am hopeful that it improves. It is on my website for download.

  • This video was much appreciated.. thanks for all the ideas. I like the 4 bar format..

  • I completely agree. This 4 bar format is great for learning, because you don't have to learn a hole song tod hear a looot of different ideas for a simplep assage.

  • I love the way you break this down into simple things and then put it all together and it sounds great.

Your videos have been so valuable to me. Thanks.

  • @jazz2511 It is so interesting watching you play, your hands move like T. Monk. You guys are thinking so much went you play. These You tubes are priceless!! Thank You so much!!

  • The awesome part I think is that he can hear every tone before it''s played. Ear training and harmony/theory are essentials. Bet he can sing all the notes too right off the page. His tools are sharp and his imagination wonderful.
