-Oh sweetie... -I said in a faint whisper in between tears -- I miss her so bad... It hurts so much...

-We all miss her, Daddy. It's been only three months but we'll miss her forever. --She looked at me with a sympathetic smile -- She loved you so much.

-You know... -I looked at her fighting back the tears with all my strength. My birthday was pure torture. I had lost her just a week before. Christmas had been unbearable. New Year's Eve was killing me. I couldn't go to a family reunion without running my tired eyes through the room looking for her. -- I'm happy she went before me... -Once again the tears took the best on me -- I would never want her to feel the pain I'm feeling now...

I could barely finish the sentence. The last words came out as a shaky whisper.

-Daddy, please don't cry... We only want to see you happy... You didn't like the party? -- She asked with a little frown. I knew she had spent hours setting everything.

-It's beautiful sweetie... Just like she would do everything... The only problem is that she's not here...

She kissed my head gently.

-I'm so sorry, Daddy... But she wouldn't want you crying. -- She opened a bright smile, fake, but a good attempt to make me stop crying -- Remember how she liked to have all the family together? How she would lay her head on your shoulder during the prayers? Daddy, whenever I think about my future and John's I try to picture you and Mom. That's what I want to be. You two gave this whole family direction and we'll never be able to thank you enough for that. Please, don't cry. We're all here for you. You're not alone. -- She managed to put a little smile on my face then wiped away all my tears. -- Now let's stop crying and enjoy the meal. I made your favorite dish. I know it's probably not as good as hers, but I promise I'm getting better. -- She said with a little smile.

I hugged her again, happy to have her as my daughter.

-Darling, thank you so much for everything you and everyone else are doing for me, to try to ease my pain. I can't say it actually eases it, but knowing I'm not alone on this helps a lot.

-You're welcome, Daddy. -- She said smiling then kissing my cheek before going to the kitchen to serve the meal.

On that night I ate with my family, and watched the fireworks with them. Losing her was not easy, and it wouldn't get better. But like she always said "You can't stop life from hurting you, but you also doesn't have to torture yourself with the pain." I chose life. From that New Year's Eve on I wished hope and strength to face the next year. To be the man she liked me to be. To teach my family everything I could before I had to leave too. I guess it's time now. I want you all to know I'm going in peace, no pain, no nothing. I just feel it's time. I'll go to sleep and if I don't wake up you'll find this letter. I want you to know you made this last few years happier than I thought they could ever be and that I learnt a lot with you. I love you all.
