Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 - 1750):
DEIN WILL GESCHEH

This is chorale no. 2 from the St. John Passion.

Dein Will gescheh, Herr Gott, zugleich
Auf Erden wie im Himmelreich.
Gib uns Geduld in Leidenszeit,
Gehorsam sein in Lieb und Leid;
Wehr und steur allem Fleisch und Blut,
Das wider deinen Willen tut!

Thy will be done, Lord God, alike
On earth as e'en in heaven's realm.
Give us restraint in time of pain,
Obedience both in love and woe;
Guard and guide every flesh and blood
Which counter to thy will doth strive!

(Martin Luther, 1539)

  • why is there an arrow on the fourth beat of the second measure?

  • @VolkColopatrion

    Well I think I made it because I had a tendency to sing F# (a half tone higher) than the correct F. Many choir singers make arrows in their scores for such purposes.
