Hyfrydol Aspects was composed as a competition piece for my son Peter to perform at the 2009 National Trumpet Competition. My idea was to craft a piece that would be musically and physically accessible to young players, but would also provide some "stretch": one section is in 5/8 meter, another requires the trumpeter to play in 3/4 over the pianist's 6/8, double tonguing may be explored (depending on tempo), and there are a few unusual accidentals and more complicated fingering work.

The hymn tune Hyfrydol (Welsh for "pleasant" or "melodious") is one of my favorites, especially in Ralph Vaughan Williams' harmonization. It has been set with several poignant texts, including two by Charles Wesley ("Love Divine, All Loves Excelling" and "Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus") and one each by William C. Dix ("Alleluia! Sing to Jesus!") and J. Wilbur Chapman ("Jesus! What a Friend for Sinners!"). The complete tune appears both in the opening and closing sections, in between which three fragments ("aspects") of the tune are developed separately.

Performed by Terry Everson, trumpet and Shiela Kibbe, piano. Recorded June 17, 2010 in the Boston University College of Fine Arts Concert Hall by Charlie Hill.

  • @DougRumbaugh Slurring the Chromatic to get to the top wasnt possible for me so that is one of my problems but i still have 4 more years to try.

  • @cowloverman27

My issue was I missed the high C at the top, and came down from B flat instead, so the entire way down I was off. I knew it, but I didn't think to just stop and start on a known value before continuing to at least salvage some points.

  • @DougRumbaugh I got my best score on my Chromatic but i also did terrible on the A and B flat

  • @cowloverman27 Yeah, exact same deal. That C Chromatic is what really did me in.

  • @DougRumbaugh I have auditioned yesterday in dallastown, didnt do as well as i planned but it was the scales that got me, not the solo's

  • @cowloverman27 Yes I agree completely. I'm actually playing it tomorrow for one such audition. I hope it goes well!

  • This is a very good song that they used for district band auditions :)

  • :O incredible

  • Beautiful!

  • One of my favorite hymn tunes. You Rock Terry!!!
