What thing to say. Of course no one's like Callas, because Callas is Callas. But this here is Gheorgiu. So if the performer's name is not Maria Callas, then it's rather insulting to both of them to expect them to sound like someone. This woman's name is Angela Gheorghiu, so let's hear her performance and judge her as such. I enjoyed it. I enjoy other amazing performers as well.
Gorgeous performance. I really like the sensitivity of Romanian female opera singers. Listen to Inva Mula-Tchako's performing "Il dolce suono" from "Lucia di Lammermoor", for instance.
What is it with the Cult of Callas? Callas writhed and wring her hands. Her long faced drooped with erzatz emotion and artificial pathetic appeal. The Cult has been able to sell all that mechanical pathos as emotive. In addition her voice was tainted with a shrill vibrato that is almost painful to the ear. Gheorghiu at least can act, and her voice is rich and warm. I've see her Traviata in more than performance and over time. Few have ever sung Violetta better, certainly not Callas.
@BetaFisheta Her voice has a deepness and warmth that some sopranos lack. She's noted for it. As a result she handles both the upper and lower notes remarkably well. I think she's expressive as well, and in performance she's a wonderful actress, emotive, serious and utterly convincing. As a bonus, she's beautiful and charming. What more do you want?
