The Hugh Mangum Photographs collection (1890s-1922) comprises approximately 688 glass plate negatives, most containing from 2 to 35 images. Mangum was a self-taught photographer from Durham, North Carolina, who liked to ride the trains throughout North Carolina and Virginia taking pictures. His subjects' relaxed, playful poses are a distinctive feature of the collection and reveal strong direction from the photographer. Women and men are pictured with their jackets and hats on and then off, with their lips pressed together and then open in broad smiles, sitting primly and then informally, with their hands laced behind their heads.
