Dr. Mukesh Haikerwal AO and others speaking at the Committee for the Economic Development of Australia on video consulting and the benefits involved.

Background of the Telestroke service;
It's important to correctly diagnose the type of stroke to ascertain the correct therapy and this needs to happen within the first 4.5 hours. For example there are a wide range of criteria to be satisfied before deciding to provide intravenous thrombolysis to patients. It is essential to exclude cerebral haemorrhage, or underlying pathology. Incorrect application of thrombolysis can have adverse effects.

Prior to the Telestroke service patients in Wangaratta did not have access to a neurologist, the aim of the Telestroke service is ;

• To provide safe and supervised access to thrombolysis in acute ischaemic stroke for patients presenting to Northeast Health Wangaratta Hospital within 4.5 hours of onset of symptoms by a partnership with Royal Melbourne Hospital Stroke neurologists.
• To up skill the rural doctors, nursing and allied health staff at NHW in management of acute stroke with particular regard to administering thrombolysis.
