My dad, Hudson County Korean War Veteran SFC of the 503rd Arty 2nd Division, John A. Sharkey, born in Bayonne is shown here with his proud family, his daughter and Grandsons. His parents, Bryan and Anna Sharkey, came to America from Ireland., and had 9 children in Bayonne, NJ. His family is very patriotic...My Aunt Grace was an Army Nurse during the Korean War, and my dad's 2 brothers also served... Dad is my hero. He is now 83, served in 2 Wars, WWII as a Merchant Seaman at age 19, and in the US Army, he served in the Korean War of the 503rd Atty, 2nd Div. as a Master Sgt. First Class of a black platoon including Charles Rangel of NYC. My dad John's Marker is Proudly displayed at the Hudson County Monument on Washington Street in Downtown Jersey City on Washington St. My dad is a Lifetime Member of the Korean War Veterans of Hudson County.. He went to Washington with his dear friend John Ormsby of Bayonne, who also served in the Korean War with his brothers and his marker, along with his brothers markers, are proudly displayed at the monument. Our families are very proud of them. Hudson County Veterans were looking for members and here is my dad, John...all of us, born in Bayonne, and he now currently resides in upstate NY, near my sister, but will always be a Hudson County Korean War Veteran, and my hero. He also rescued the passengers from the Conrail train when it plunged into Newark Bayoff a railroad drawbridge,, fifty years ago....Gabe Pressman interviewed my dad in 58 during the rescue of the passengers of the train wreck and he saved many people that day with all the other rescuers, from the NJ and NY area, Coast Guard, My dad was a merchant seaman and an avid swimmer and fisherman. His picture was in all the newspapers on that day when he was rescuing passengers from the train that was dangling off the drawbridge on that fateful day, In the photo, he is shown looking up waiting for help for a passenger Norris Fay who suffered a broken leg in the accident., and he always helped others in need...Another day he helped a man who was hit by a car, until help arrived and his picture was in the Bayonne Times...He has a heart of gold and an Irish wit to match..He always has something funny to say...We all get our sense of humor from him and his late mom, Anna. He is a funny fellow...guaranteed to make you laugh..
