CA Event: Mexican Immigration and the Future of Race in America

In the recently published, Mongrels, Bastards, Orphans, and Vagabonds, Gregory Rodriguez takes an in-depth look at the largest immigrant group in American history. Rodriguez examines the complexities of the heritage and the racial and cultural synthesis--mestizaje--that has defined the Mexican people since the Spanish conquest in the sixteenth century. Vis-a-vis the present era of Mexican American confidence, Rodriguez argues that the rapidly expanding Mexican American integration in to the mainstream is changing not only how Americans think about race but how we envision our nation.

Gregory Rodriguez is an Irvine Senior Fellow and Director of the California Fellows Program at the New America Foundation. Rodriguez has written widely on issues of national identity, social cohesion, assimilation, race relations, religion, immigration, ethnicity, demographics, and social and political trends in such leading publications as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Economist, The Washington Post, and the Los Angeles Times, where he is an op-ed columnist.

Rodriguez makes some interesting observations about the integration of Mexicans into American society and the way their children through inter-marriage classify and re-classify themselves racially and politically. I'm going to read his book.

and the thing is im not a german all 4 of my grand parents had some german heritage but also 3 grand parents had british islanders in the period before 1800 one grand parent was ethnic my moms mom who was 5th generation bavarian. by 1900 my people ethnogenized into appalacian people. plus i have alot of native american indian and this idea that mexicans are trying to fit in is like us appalachians trying to fit in to the USA.

@pipomenas thats a very facinating story of your heritage this leeds some credibility that theres thousands of ethnic germans living in mexico if your american father was a german american.... in german the word grenze means border its possible that gringo is slang for "border person" in spanish. my heritage is very rich and i understand what this Rodriguez means about the people not fitting in and changing there idenity on the census my mother acidentally labeled our house german in 1990.
