According to Baby Center, in 2009 the top boy's name was Aiden while Isabella clinched the title for top girl's name. Names like Bella, Alice and Edward were also widely common thanks to the bestselling vampire series Twilight. Is that how parents are choosing names? Does pop culture actually affect the names we choose for our kids? (Apparently Sasha and Malia moved up on the list too).

Today, Lisa Belkin, author of The New York Times blog The Motherlode asks panelists Rebecca Woolf and Heather Sophr how they chose their childrens' names and if they regret them. Though Rebecca's daughter Fable is often called Mabel, Sable, and even Gable, Rebecca loves it's uniqueness and wouldn't change it for the world. Heather looked for literary tie ins and inspiration for her babies names (Madeline Alice and Anabelle Violet), and like Rebecca, doesn't regret them at all. She does wonder, however, how parents could come up with bizarre names (and not think about long term nicknames) for kids-- In fact, she went to college with kids named Extra and Random...

  • I think Anabelle Violet is REALLY pretty(: This is a rlly good video, and like Heather, I didn't like my name Jennifer when I was little. I thought it was so boring and bland. I tried to think of a name that would fit me, but i couldn't do it! I realized that Jennifer is the perfect name for me. And I feel like it does have a lot of my personality in it, and so... I love it now(: When I grow older, I want to name my kids after literary characters, because I think they hold a lot of inspiration(:

  • The only thing is my son and my husband have the exact same name...I just put Jr. after his name (They'r name means early winter in greek). I think I would have gave my son a different middle name.

  • My name is CeAnn (See Ann) and it's interesting to get people to pronounce it right and to spell it correctly but it is what I get the most compliments on and having a unique name is worth it. I hope my mom never regrets it :)

  • Love the name Evan..that is my sons name Evan Gerard!!! My daughter is Genevieve Aynsley and I don't regret either name!!!! :) :) :

  • my dad knows a guy called shane payne

  • My mom almost named me kandi and my last name is apple so it would be kandi apple lol

  • i went to school with a guy named david davidson

  • Gable??? LOL!

  • I called my octuplets:

    Ryland

    Asher

    Cruz

    Nyella

    Alexander

    Kaison

    Archer

    Valentina

6 Boys and 2 Girls! All though I was expecting some nicknames for Ryland as Ry, Asher as Ash, Nyella as Ella, Kaison as Kai, Archer as Arch, Alexander as Alex but we didn't want Valentina nicknamed as Val or Tina but she got Val! So we made it clear that we didn't want that then she was just Valentina!

  • i like the names Heather S. gave her kids, they're very sophisticated and classy
