Tribute to actress Gail Russell who was married to actor Guy Madison.

''At a reception for Modern Screen,the fan magazine,we ran into our friends Guy Madison & his wife Gail Russell.It was one of their rare public appearances.Gail was a delicate little bird,afraid of noises & crowds.She was intelligent & uncomplicated,a person who should never have had a career as an actress.Apart from a pathological stage fright,she was extremely sensitive to the crass motives of the studios,& unable to overcome deep feelings of loneliness. Guy's arm was guiding Gail toward us.Gail habitually kept her eyes down,& it was always a shock when she lifted her glance,her childlike expression filled with innocent vulnerability.Hers was the beauty of a Madonna,& it threw everyone off balance.She did not understand the effect she had on people,& in fear she would drop her eyes again,as if someone else's interest in her was more the she could bear. I feel very sad whenever I think of Gail Russell & the desolate way in which she ended her life some years later just a few houses away from the one we lived in on Beverley Glen.Close to twenty empty bottles of liquor surrounded her in her small bedroom.She had lain there drinking herself to death. How could all of us who knew this incredibly talented & beautiful woman have failed her so drastically?.......'' -actress Corinne Calvet

@redemp1234tion She was distraught all right. Her brother was a successful musician.that her parents doted on.Favoritism by a parent has a adverse affect on the other childs emotional well being.

This may have been Gail Russell's dilemma.

Gail Russell and Ava Gardner are the best from that era. Most of Gail Russell's movies were in black and white.Too bad she didn't make more color movies.

Gail Russell should have a published biography of her. But when I checked on Amazon there was nothing.So many other actresses have some.Like Monroe,Gardner,Lamarr, Seberg, Etc;

Why do so many end up tragic like Gail?

Is it the Star System ? Played up and discarded?

Or did they have problems that they couldn't overcome?

A well done presentation for Gail Russell.

I have seen several of her movies, the camera liked her for sure. But she was a good actress too.

One thing I noticed was she was always clenching and unclenching her hands.

Had anxiety and stage fright. Which she tried to control with alcohol, but failed.

Still she left fond memories of herself to remember.

A very good tribute to Miss Russell,with lots of rarely seen pictures. Someone needs to write a biography of her to answer alot of questions that people have. Maybe you're that someone.  How about It ?
