Original recording. Jerry didn't like the song, so Kenny Rogers and The First Edition recorded it and made it a hit.

  • Wow who knew posting a comment would be so hard. It appears youtube's spam-filter is a nazi.

Basically I posted to say you should listen to Mickey Newbury's version. He wrote it, and nobody does it better.

  • So you are Mickey Newbury?

  • @spayspay give mickey a break, its the best version, easily, considering he wrote. dont take such a smartass position "against" his comment. its a great song and you should hear it regardless of what you would eventually think of it.

  • @donmajikjuan Huh? What did I say?

  • from the soul my way album, 1967

perhaps the first artist to record this song

  • It is the first.

  • I dissagree, I am a fan of both Kenny Rogers and Jerry Lee, but Rogers owns this song. It wouldn't have been the classic it is todfay without Rogers take on this song.

  • Mickey's version has more depth given his ability to impart so much feeling into his vocals, and since he wrote it, his version must be considered the most like the song was meant to sound. However, Kenny Roger's version sounds "right" to us because it's the one we're used to hearing. Uncle Wilie's version is evocative of Mickey's and so, is probably more artistically pure than other covers. To my ear, Jerry Lee's version is sort of empty sounding emotionwise, as if he didn't like singing it.

  • Willie Nelson does the best cover regardless

  • @FabFM you are 100% correct.

  • @MickeyNewburyMusic so true but still this is the best cover

  • dont know why, but this kinda remind me of a dude

  • I agree Mickey Newberry made it best. I love playing all the version of it I know (4 versions on youtube); I love showing my friends how Jerry Lee Lewis did it, then Kenny Rogers, Sharon Lewis, children of bodom, etc and then I climax with the sad sorrowful version of Mickey Newberry, who's different pace adds a complete twist

  • Jerry Lee and The First Edition are two of my favorites. The piano is really cool on this version as is Jerry's lead, but The First Edition really made this what it was.

  • @CheersandSuch no not a bad version at all but KR was just a lot better.. this is a good song

  • @ForeignLauren I kind of agree with you. Kenny Roger's version is better, but this version is anything but terrible.

  • @billprestonesquire The song was about decades before the BL. It certainly gave it more popularity, but it was already a hugely popular song having been on many Rogers hits collections that sold in the millions.
