This video shows the difference between the placement tool and the matrix layer.
The placement tool (F6) is used to position a figure relative to the center.
If you suddenly notice that you move everything instead of a single layer, then you have activated the placement tool. To select a matrix layer, goto F1 and select the layer under "Draw Order"
