this is called box jumping i do it for football all the time and its dangerous i got hurt doing this and been sacred ever since.....lol

Explosive power in the legs. But most importantly it is a building block into more complex plyometrics. You need to learn the landing before moving on to harder plyos. Otherwise you can really hurt yourself. You want to be able to absorb the shock and not land forward on your toes. Also, when you jump you want you butt back using your glutes instead of just quads (knees forward).
