This very popular song comes in many versions with a variety of lyrics, including stock phrases which can be found in several songs. It is often performed as a blues or jazz song. It was especially popular at the beginning of the 20th century when it was a standard of the Buddy Bolden band in New Orleans.

It has been recorded countless times, but some of the more notable versions include those by Bessie Smith, Pete Seeger, Lonnie Johnson (1928), Blind Boy Fuller (1937), Leadbelly, Odetta, Big Joe Turner, Lightnin' Hopkins, Fats Domino (1951), Elvis Presley, Big Bill Broonzy (1956), Jean Ritchie, Louis Armstrong, Josh White, Dave Van Ronk, Janis Joplin, Joan Baez, Ray Charles, Bill Monroe, Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash.

  • Outstanding! These old folk songs are the best!

  • @coolanddark Thanks, Dan. Not sure why it took me so long to get around to this one.

  • @raymondcrooke Do you know `no more auction block for me`? Maybe you already posted it. If not I would love to hear you sing that one! Got that song on my mind lately for some reason! Dylan did that one so great!

  • @coolanddark Yes. I do it as part of a trilogy with "Oh Freedom" and "Motherless Child." You can find it here: /watch?v=8D5SDOB_PGQ

  • A splendid rendition, Raymond!

  • @marcoacca Thank you, Marco. I hope to sing with you again some day.

  • @cariboubill Thanks, Bill. Glad you liked it.

  • @1952banjo Thanks, Vivian. It took me a while to get around to it, though it's one I've known most of my life.

  • @williamajk Thanks for watching, Willie.

  • @SirCoughsalot Yes, it's not exactly a jolly song. Odetta has always been one of my favourite singers.

  • @blinddrunkal Thanks for the video response, Alan. I like your version - very different words from mine!
