I agree with you when you say it's a lovely song. My point, however, was about the curious difference between its current association (comment mentions the way North Americans associate it to the Irish) and its origin (being written by some English bloke)...

In sum, it's a great tune and obviously everyone will claim it their own.

I thought it was called the Londonderry Air and the music was written by an person.The reason it is called the Londonderry Air is the music sheet was found in that part of Ireland.Maybe the words where written by an English person but who cares its a lovely song.

i suppose it like the song Will ye go Lassie go but every one thinks thats a Scots song when infact its an Irish.
