In my experience, a relaxed fist will only work with a straight forward punch. A punch such as a hook or uppercut will not benefit in any way from relaxing your fist and in fact will cause wrist injuries. The muscles and tendons in no way effect the power of the punch as there's still the same transfer of kinetic energy. The effect of the muscles and tendons in a punch, additionally, are to support your joints and bones. Removing that support isn't a very great idea.

I see this and it looks like something I can definitely do but then I try it and it's much harder then it looks. I can do it but not very well and my form sucks compared to yours.
how do you put your weight on the tiger claw without straightening your fingers?

@gingowitch you need to build up to it. When you first begin, start out as standing wall pushups. Once you're able to do them in that position, take it to the ground and do them on your knees. When you're comfortable on the knees then try them full on. Also include other exercises to increase/condition the strength of the fingers and remember to use jow after training.

@tigon001 so it's kinda soft but not too soft..? If you were to do them on, let's say, wooden floor, would it be the same ? Would it be possible to have a close-up of your fist while you do the pheonix eye push-ups? How do you prepare for those ? I guess you even if you can do finger or fist pushups you can't wake up one morning and go phoenix eye pushups, can you ?

@darth8freak To prepare for P/E pushups on the floor you must first begin them as wall pushups (please read some of my comments to others for an explaination). You can also condition the P/E to lighter impacts such as striking phone books, focus pads/targets, table surfaces, etc. Check out my video of using the P/E to strike rebreakable boards to give you an idea.
Finger and knuckle pushups are great, but the condition different parts of the hand and therefore unrelated to the P/E variety.
