a better way to use that tool is to HOLD it near the magnesium shavings with your knife pressing down, and PULL the Flint thing AWAY from the tinder. This way you will not scatter everything when your knife accidently hits the tinder pile

first and foremost, shave a "quarter" size shavings of mag, then just slide on the flint(don't strike), that is all, you made it much harder then what it is.
