  • @MozMTH I didn't think this was Alice singing, infact I know it's not it's Lou Watts, my fave Alice vocal's are on the track Liberation or Ah-Men "Heres a piece of paper your officially free":D

  • Has anyone hear oysterband's version of this?

  • My mileage varies on Alice Nutter's voice - I think it's a lovely, pure folk voice. But all according to taste, of course.

  • that lassies voice does ma head in. listen to dick gaughans version. shites all over this

  • Oops - you are right, kind sir! I had to resit my history O-level, and sometimes my typing fingers get busy before brain is in gear, but to dislocate the diggers by a whole century from the civil war and the execution of Charles I etc, suggests possible early onset Alzheimers on my part. I'll get my coat... :)

  • @redcrowdemon 1549 was Ketts' rebellion in Norfolk about similar issues such as the enclosure of common lands. But 100 years before the digger communities were established.

  • They changed the lyric 'we need no swords' to 'we take up swords' :D

  • I just wish this song were a bit longer. 2 minutes and change, is a bit short.

  • The Diggers were Christian Radicals who believed in a literal reading of gospel equality. They called themselves True Levellers. Its anachronistic to call them socialists or anarchists though they were certainly forerunners of those philosophies. There were two other leveller communes in Buckinghamshire and Nottinghamshire. They were all destroyed by landowners who were forerunners of fascists. Winstanley later became a landowner himself, its to be hoped a more enlightened one.
