March 13, 2009 NEW WILMINGTON, Lawrence County-- For hundreds of Westminster College students and employees, an online portal allows them to access campus information, e-mail and network drives from off campus. However, after five years of research and development, Westmisnter is launching a new and improved online portal. And people on campus are already noticing. "We tried to make it more user-friendly and more like a Westminster community," Kelly Hartner, the Enterprise Network Manager at Westminster College, told WCN 24/7. "It has a lot of neat new features based on feedback from what people on campus wanted." An initial look at the new portal provides this Westminster Community feel. The default page has the latest news on campus as well as entertainment and sports news. There is also a page which brings up contact information for all students and employees on campus. One of the notable features on the new portal allows students and employees to access the library's online indexes and journals without having to leave the portal. Hartner says this was one of the most requested features for the new portal. And it's already gotten a few thumbs up. "Thanks for making the library available off campus, that is really great," Dr. Douglas Armstead, assistant professor of physics, posted online. Armstead used the convenience of the portal's new "issues and comments" forum to show his appreciation. The portal now allows anyone who logs in to post comments and questions in a variety of forums, including SGA (Student Government Association) and Lost and Found. Check out our Youtube video coverage as WCN247.com reporter Andy Borts digs through Westminster College's new online portal. Here's the link to the new portal students, faculty and staff can use to check out the new features.
